CLEAN ENERGY FOUNDATION

FROM ITS ESTABLISHMENT UP TODAY (1994-2004)

Between   the years 1993-94 several projects were being carried out in connection with new and clean energies in the physics department of Hacettepe University. ‘The everlasting  energy island’ project was one of them. As a matter of fact many contacts were undertaken  in connection with this concept inside and outside the country. The ex-chairman of Turkish Scientific and Technical Research Council (TUBİTAK), Prof. Dr. Tosun Terzioğlu showed his interest in the matter and together with Prof. Dr. Demir İnan they both shared the same opinions in establishing an institute or a foundation within the framework of TUBİTAK. The independent features of a foundation were taken more into consideration, thus the  establishment of the ‘Clean Energy Foundation (CEF)’ took place at  the end of 1994. 14 founder members and 4 institutional partners had taken place at the beginning as founder members.(See Appendix 1 for the list.)

The main aim of Clean Energy Foundation is summarized in its brochure as follows:

Since our ancestors began to use the fire as an energy source, the living standards of mankind on the earth had been improved compared to other living creatures who only benefit from the food energy. From this time on, man always sought after new energy sources, found and used them for upgrading his living standards. This led to ever increasing rate of energy usage by mankind. As in the past and also today, the communities of man that use more energy, are more powerful and live more comfortable. Therefore, today’s man never thinks to give up his increasing rate of energy usage.

However, the environmental effects caused by the usage of great quantities of non-renewable and polluting energy sources led man to start thinking and producing new solutions on these issues, especially after the third quarter of twentieth century. Turning to clean and renewable energy sources, studies on more efficient usage of energy and energy conservation have become the main issues intensively studied for finding solutions regarding the energy usage problems. These studies are gaining more and more acceptability and support from mankind. Clean Energy Foundation is an organisation established by individuals and organisations who recognized the importance of supporting the studies on these issues.

As it is apparent from the above summary that, CEF’s main aim is being in the agenda and not being an outsider in the clean and renewable energy studies in the world. The target of CEF is to make the Turkey as a center of attraction in clean and renewable energies, as Turkey is situated in the cornerstone of three continents (Europe, Africa and Asia) and geographically having abundant sources of renewable energies.

The objectives and activities of Clean Energy Foundation (CEF) -(TEMEV In Turkish)- can be summarized  under 3 headlines.

·        Research & Development and Application studies

·        Educational, Information and Publicity studies

·        Compiling Information and Documents studies

in the fields of renewable energies’ utilization.

The studies carried out by CEF since its establishment are summarized under the above headlines in the following:

Research & Development and Application Studies:

·        Establishing Work Groups

Three work groups have been established.

3.       “Solar Architecture in Anatolia”. This work group was established in March 1996 and Assoc. Prof. Dr.Çetin Göksu was selected as the chairman of the group.

4.       “Biogas” study group was established in June 1997 and  Gökhan Demirci was selected as the chairman of the group.

5.       “Solar cells and their Applications”. This work group was founded in December 1997 and Prof. Dr. Şener Oktik was selected as the chairman of the group.

·        Developing a computer program for the usage of solar collectors.

Using solar energy for heating water is widely used in our country. However systems are generally constructed without sufficient  knowledge and calculations as regards to geographic conditions. Thus taking this matter into consideration CEF had developed a computer program in 1997 by physics engineer Engin Kıran a member of our foundation that calculates how many square meters of solar collectors are to be installed almost n all the cities of Turkey, according to the requested hot water demand. The details maintained with the help of this program is given upon request together with feasibility reports  and inspection of the system will also be provided.

·        The Projects developed by CEF after the 1999 earthquake in Marmara Region.

The earthquake in Marmara Region in  August 17, l999 had a great impact and caused a  heavy destruction over a wide area. CEF had developed 4 projects in order to mitigate the impact of the disaster.

1st Project : Supplying hot water by solar collectors for 200-300 people living in pre-fabric

houses or in tent cities.

The system operates without any need for fuels (gas, electricity etc) or any heating systems as electric heater, combi etc, thus providing easy hot water facilities for the people living in the area. Moreover it is obvious that such systems are more safe  when the possible frequency of earthquakes in the region are considered. Besides the geographic  conditions of  our country makes it a wise behavior to use as much solar energy as possible instead of using exported energies which creates economic bounds to foreign countries.

2nd Project : Establishing a system to provide electricity from solar energy.

CEF can provide a solar-electric system with a power of 3 kW to be used in tent cities and pre-fabric houses. 100 halogen lamps with 36 watts will illuminate the places where the tents and pre-fabric housing is located. Food preservations could also be provided with a capacity of 25 refrigerators. The system will be installed over an area of approximately 100 square meters and provide electricity without intermittence. It will also be effectively used during the times of catastrophes, letting the rescue teams work night and day without any brake. These systems having no moving parts are given  guarantee by their manufacturers for 15-20 years.

3rd Project:  Supplying clean water from sea water by using solar energy.

The number one necessity in an earthquake area is the clean drinking water. The Marmara earthquake emphasized the need for providing clean water from sea water since the earthquake hit mainly in the area close to the sea shore. According to some calculations undertaken by CEF, it is claimed that1500 liters of clean water could be provided through a solar water distillation system installed on an area of 5oo square meters, which means 1.5 litres of drinking water to 1000 people.

4th Project : Organising the rebuilding process in the earthquake region in accordance with the climate, environment and energy consciousness.

The main objective of this project is achieving a contemporary rebuilding of the area more concerned with energy savings. A pre-calculation shows that a 30 %  energy saving achieved without any extra cost of the building. If this saving ratio is increased to 50 %, only an additional cost around 7-8 % is needed. Necessary applications are already made and most of our members who are also experts on the subject are ready to help without any benefit.

The first two among the four projects mentioned above are implemented at the UN tent-city in İzmit. (More details are given in the next paragraph.)

Unfortunately the third project found no financial support and received no answer (neither denial no approval) from the government authorities.

·        Building of a Solar House and a Science Museum  in the earthquake region.(supported by UNDP/GEF)

After the August 17,l999 Marmara earthquake CEF had prepared four projects as mentioned above. Two of these projects found the opportunity to be implemented and took the support of four other establishments and are applied at the UNDP tent-city in İzmit. The establishments supporting the projects are: Kaldera-Dağsan Solar  A.Ş.(Konya), Dunasolar Photovoltaics (Budapest/Hungary), Hacettepe University Physics Engineering Department(Ankara), Mutlu Akü A.Ş (İstanbul). The project was carried under the supervision of CEF starting in November 1999 and finalized in March 2000.

A 100 square meters earthquake resistant steel construction building was made for this project. 40 solar collectors and PV panels with a power of approximately 3 kW were placed on the inclined roof of the building facing south. The area around the building was organized as a leisure area or a gathering place and was illuminated with the electricity supplied by the solar PV panels. Inside the building was designed as a small science museum having various kinds of experimental sets and educational posters.

The hot water supplied from solar collectors was connected to the two shower cabins which are placed at the tent-city (each cabin contains 8 showers), and another washing unit.(for kitchen use)

The electricity obtained was used to illuminate the inside and the outside of the building with the help of batteries and inverter systems. The main advantage of this system is to have a continuously illuminated area no matter there is an earthquake or any other extraordinary situation, giving comfort to the inhabitants. As it is known, the August 99 earthquake hit the area around 3.05 am in the morning and the electricity was totally cut right after automatically for safety reasons. The phsycological  impact of the event was doubled because of the darkness around. This was the reason why we insisted on an ever illumination system without intermittence, using the solar energy. The place serves both as a park and also as a gathering place in times of extraordinary events.

The reason for organizing the inside of the building as a small science museum is to motivate the interests of the people living in the tent-city towards science, since the earthquake had showed the people how important science is. Moreover, the people are not going to live in the tents just for few days. They are going to spent quite a long time over there and therefore need as much social activities as possible.

Another important aspect of the project was that it was achieved successfully in a very short time by a non governmental organization, together with three other private sector organizations and a university.

The “Solar House and Science Museum” project also submitted to the international “Energy Globe 2001 Awards” and competed with 1000 other projects from 72 countries and was placed as finalist among 50 other best projects. The award ceremony was held in Wels, Austria and Demir İnan participated in the meeting. The project took place in the ‘Energy Globe Awards’ CD-ROM and a presentation of the project was also made in the “World Sustainable Energy Day 2001” activities on March 1st and 2nd ant the same place.
